DARK-BRIGHT SOLITONS AND VORTICES IN BOSE-EINSTEIN CONDENSATES MAY 2014 DONG YAN B.S., ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY, CHINA M.S., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Panayotis G. Kevrekidis This dissertation focuses on the properties of nonlinear waves in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). The fundamental model here is the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, the so-called Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation, which is a mean-field description of BECs. The systematic analysis begins by considering the dark-bright (DB)-soliton interactions and multiple-dark-bright-soliton complexes in atomic two-component BECs. The interaction between two DB solitons in a homogeneous condensate and at the presence of the trap are both considered. Our analytical approximation relies in a Hamiltonian perturbation theory, which leads to an equation of motion of the centers of DB-soliton interacting pairs. Employing this equation, we demonstrate the existence of robust DB-soliton

Interaction of dark-bright solitons in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates
We study the interaction of dark-bright solitons in two component Bose-Einstein condensates by suitably tailoring the trap potential, atomic scattering length and atom gain or loss. We show that the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation can be mapped onto the Manakov model. An interesting class of matter wave solitons and their interaction are identified with time independent and periodically ...
متن کاملSolitons for nearly integrable bright spinor Bose-Einstein condensate
Using the explicit forms of eigenstates for linearized operator related to a matrix version of Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, soliton perturbation theory is developed for the $F=1$ bright spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. A small disturbance of the integrability condition can be considered as a small correction to the integrable equation. By choosing appropriate perturbation, the soli...

This dissertation studies solitary waves in collisionally inhomogeneous BoseEinstein condensates in a magnetic trap using a quasi-1D mean-field model. We introduce a model for Bose-Einstein condensate with spatially and temporally modulated nonlinearity. In terms of the spatially periodic nonlinear lattice, we study BECs in a lattice one of which minimum in a period either overlap with the mini...
متن کاملVortices in attractive Bose-Einstein condensates in two dimensions.
The form and stability of quantum vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates with attractive atomic interactions is elucidated. They appear as ring bright solitons, and are a generalization of the Townes soliton to nonzero winding number m. An infinite sequence of radially excited stationary states appear for each value of m, which are characterized by concentric matter-wave rings separated by nodes...
